The Role of AI in Child Development: Opportunities, Risks, and What It Means for Mental Health
Introduction
Children no longer find artificial intelligence (AI) to be science fiction. Young people are coming into contact with systems that can react conversationally, personalise content, and occasionally make decisions for them. Examples of these systems include conversational chatbots, adaptive learning apps, classroom aides, and toys driven by artificial intelligence. These tools offer scalable mental health care, early developmental concern detection, and customised learning. However, they also raise fresh issues in psychology and development: How are attention, social skills, emotion management, and identity shaped by being raised with responsive, frequently human-like algorithms? What implications does that have for mental health, both now and as today’s youth grow up?
This article analyses the available data, balances the advantages and disadvantages and provides helpful advice for clinicians, educators and parents who wish to use AI to promote healthy development rather than impede it.

What we mean by “AI in childhood”
“AI” in children’s lives takes many forms. It includes recommendation algorithms in video platforms, adaptive tutoring systems that adjust difficulty in real time, conversational agents (chatbots) designed for learning or mental-health support, and toys that respond to speech or emotion cues. It also encompasses background systems—analytics that monitor engagement or flag risk signals for clinicians. These tools vary widely in their sophistication and evidence base, but they share a common property: they collect data and use it to produce responses tailored to the child (UNICEF, 2024).
What the research says — the big takeaways
- AI can personalize learning and detect early risk—but evidence is mixed and emerging. AI-driven educational and screening tools show promise in tailoring instruction and identifying developmental concerns earlier than traditional screens. Systematic reviews note potential benefits for individualized learning and early monitoring, but emphasize the need for rigorous evaluation and validation of algorithms before large-scale deployment (Reinhart et al., 2024; Bakır, 2024).
- Conversational AI and mental-health chatbots are growing rapidly—safety and efficacy are not yet settled for children. Reviews of AI conversational agents in pediatric mental health identify potential for symptom monitoring and low-threshold support, but also raise concerns about accuracy, safeguarding, and the suitability of automated responses for developing minds (Mansoor et al., 2025).
- Screen time and mediated interactions matter—and caregiver presence moderates effects. Recent syntheses of screen-exposure research show consistent associations between excessive, unaccompanied screen use and delays or lower scores in language, attention, and socioemotional outcomes—especially in very young children. Importantly, co-viewing or guided interaction with caregivers reduces harms (Ponti et al., 2023; Muppalla et al., 2023).
- AI design matters: developmental alignment and co-design improve outcomes. Research and policy briefs emphasize designing AI systems that match children’s cognitive capacities, involve educators and families in co-design, and prioritize transparency and explainability—otherwise, products risk reinforcing inequality or producing confusing, anthropomorphic interactions (Kurian et al., 2025; EveryoneAI, 2024).
- Policy, ethics, and human oversight are central—technology alone is not a panacea. International organizations and researchers call for stronger governance, age-appropriate safeguards, parental controls, and regulatory oversight to protect children from bias, privacy loss and exposure to inappropriate content (UNICEF, 2024; OECD, 2025).
How AI could support child mental health and development
Personalized learning and adaptive scaffolding
Adaptive tutoring systems can adjust difficulty and presentation to match a child’s current skills—keeping them in a “stretch” zone that promotes learning without overwhelming them. When aligned with sound pedagogical principles and human oversight, this personalization can increase engagement and build competence, both of which protect mental health by supporting self-efficacy and reducing frustration (Delello et al., 2025).
Early screening and monitoring at scale
AI models trained on large datasets can flag atypical patterns—delays in language, markers of attention difficulty, or sudden mood shifts—in ways that might speed referral to assessment or support. Early detection can mean earlier intervention, which is likely to improve long-term outcomes (Reinhart et al., 2024).
Low-barrier mental-health supports
Conversational agents can lower thresholds for help—offering psychoeducation, mood tracking, or coping strategies when clinicians are not immediately accessible. In resource-strained settings, such tools may provide useful interim support (Mansoor et al., 2025).
Enriched STEM and reasoning experiences
AI tools designed for early STEM learning (e.g., problem prompts that adapt to a child’s input) can foster curiosity, problem-solving, and persistence when thoughtfully integrated into curricula (Ozturk et al., 2025). These gains support healthy cognitive development and later academic confidence.
The risks to mental health and development
1. Attention and executive function concerns
Interactive AI systems and persuasive recommendation algorithms may fragment attention and promote rapid-reward behaviors (e.g., autoplay videos, gamified feedback). For young brains still developing self-regulation, such patterns can weaken sustained attention and impulse control—skills that underpin emotional regulation and school success (Ponti et al., 2023; Panjeti-Madan et al., 2023).
2. Social learning and human connection
Children learn social cues, empathy, and emotional reciprocity through face-to-face, contingent interactions with adults and peers. Over-reliance on AI companions—especially those that mimic human emotions—may reduce practice with messy human response patterns and distort expectations about relationships (UNICEF, 2024). The result could be weaker socioemotional skills when interactions are predominantly with deterministic, reward-driven systems.
3. Anthropomorphism and boundary confusion
Young children can attribute humanlike qualities to AI (e.g., believing a toy “feels” sad). That anthropomorphism may lead to confusion about agency and responsibility, and in some contexts it can reduce the child’s tendency to seek human help when distressed (OECD, 2025).
4. Misinformation, bias, and inappropriate content
AI systems trained on biased or low-quality data can produce harmful recommendations or reinforce stereotypes. When AI offers health advice (including mental-health suggestions) without human oversight, there’s a real risk of misinformation or unsafe guidance. Clinical use demands robust validation and explicit escalation pathways to human clinicians (Mansoor et al., 2025; Yang et al., 2025).
5. Privacy, surveillance and trust
AI tools often require extensive child data to function optimally. This can create surveillance dynamics—data about behavior, mood, and interactions stored and analyzed by private companies. The privacy implications are profound and raise ethical questions about consent, data retention, and future impacts on autonomy and trust (UNICEF, 2024).
Moderators: When AI is more or less risky
Not all AI exposure is equal. Several factors modify whether an AI interaction will help or harm a child:
- Age and developmental stage. Younger children (under 5–6) are especially sensitive to the social and attentional effects of mediated interaction; guidelines recommend minimal unmediated screen/AI time in early childhood (Ponti et al., 2023).
- Caregiver involvement. Co-use—where caregivers scaffold or co-view AI experiences—reduces harms and amplifies learning. Joint attention and discussion turn passive media into active learning (Xiao et al., 2025).
- Design quality and transparency. Systems designed with developmental expertise, explainable behavior and minimal persuasive mechanics are safer. Co-design with educators and families improves alignment to children’s needs (EveryoneAI, 2024; Kurian et al., 2025).
- Context of use. Tools used for brief learning episodes with teacher mediation differ in risk from endless autoplay video or unsupervised conversational chatbots late at night. Context matters.
Practical guidance — how to harness AI while protecting mental health
Parents and caregivers
- Prioritize human interaction for young children. Keep face-to-face play and caregiver talk central in early years; use AI as a supplement rather than a substitute (Ponti et al., 2023).
- Co-use and scaffold. Sit with children when they engage AI tools—ask questions, connect digital content to real-world experiences, and model critical thinking (Xiao et al., 2025).
- Set clear boundaries and routines. Limit unsupervised, open-ended AI use; prefer short, goal-oriented interactions. Use device settings and parental controls where available (OECD, 2025).
- Watch for signs of distress or confusion. If a child treats AI as a replacement for friends, shows anxiety tied to online interactions, or repeats unsafe advice from chatbot, step in and consult a professional.
Educators and schools
- Adopt developmentally aligned AI. Choose platforms co-designed with educators, transparent about data use, and configurable for pedagogical goals (Delello et al., 2025).
- Embed human facilitation. Use AI to free teacher time for high-impact human tasks—discussion, social-emotional coaching and personalized feedback—not to replace them.
- Monitor equity and access. Ensure tools don’t widen gaps; scaffold supports for students who lack home resources and evaluate outcomes across subgroups (Reinhart et al., 2024).
Clinicians and policy-makers
- Treat AI tools as adjuncts—validate before clinical adoption. Evaluate conversational agents and apps with the same rigor as other interventions; require clinical trials when used for diagnosis or treatment (Mansoor et al., 2025; Yang et al., 2025).
- Mandate privacy safeguards and age-appropriate defaults. Policies should require data minimization, transparent retention rules and default protections for minors (UNICEF, 2024).
- Invest in training and co-design. Fund programs that bring clinicians, developers and families together to design AI that respects developmental needs and mental-health safeguards (Kurian et al., 2025).
Conclusion
AI is a powerful new component of the environment that influences how children develop. The ideal formula combines policy protections, human facilitation, and responsible design. In terms of mental health, this entails utilising AI to supplement human abilities rather than to replace them. This allows children to receive early, tailored care while continuing to practise the messy, fundamental human abilities of empathy, patience, and in-person social learning. In order for AI to become a tool for flourishing rather than a hidden risk to wellbeing, policymakers, developers, physicians, educators and families must collaborate—testing tools, maintaining transparency, and putting children’s developmental needs first.
